Sari Zon -

Sari Zon is a Toronto artist working in the Encaustic medium. Her work is an exploration of colour, texture and form. The layering process of painting with encaustics allows for considerable experimentation with inks, papers, fabrics and metal objects, and both collage and ink transfer are central elements of her work.  Her practice, by its nature, is measured and disciplined; each layer must be thoroughly fused to the layer beneath in order to ensure that the paintings remain intact. The process is an involved one employing a varied collection of brushes, irons, heat guns, electric heating pans, carving tools, mark makers and scrapers.

The foundation of Sari’s work is the paint-making process itself, beginning with a visit to an Ontario honey farm to purchase the beeswax. She melts the wax with damar resin and pigments and molds the mixture into individual pucks of paint.

The art of painting with encaustics is a tactile, multi-sensory experience; a union of rich scents, warm, soft textures and smooth, glossy surfaces.  It is the organic nature of this process that keeps Sari in a constant state of creative motion, as it allows the journey to be equally as moving and relevant as the finished work.

Sari received her BA in Fine Arts from York University in 1994.  Her work hangs in private and corporate collections in Canada and the US.
